The week in review: 12 to 16 October
Signal
The main share-price measures fell this week, but industrial shares rose. The decline was not shared by every sector.
Why it matters
The All-Share index fell 0.54% and the domestic index 0.62% from 9 to 16 October. Banks and industrials moved in opposite directions.
What to watch
Different company weights can explain a falling index despite sector gains. Friday close: DSEI 4,572.74, TSI 10,079.13.

All 28 comparable 9 and 16 October reference closes, including non-traded reference prices. This is weekly price breadth, not Friday traded-counter breadth.
Carried 7 October auction 1208, not a new weekly result. Annualized yields, not weekly returns.

Share prices
Signal
Bank shares fell this week while industrial shares rose. A falling market measure did not mean every sector weakened.
Why it matters
From 9 to 16 October, banks fell 1.62% and industrials rose 1.74%. The domestic index, which combines company prices, fell 0.62%.
What to watch
Companies have unequal weights in an index. That can explain the split; these changes alone do not reveal its cause.
Friday trading
Signal
Almost nine of every ten shillings traded on Friday went through two banks. This does not describe the full week.
Why it matters
CRDB and NMB accounted for 89.6% of Friday’s TZS 3.652bn share trading. A 400,000-share CRDB block was part of the session.
What to watch
A block is a pre-arranged trade. This total includes it; concentration cannot establish investor confidence or trading motives.
Currency
Signal
The official dollar reference rose slightly over the week. A dollar required more shillings than on the previous Friday.
Why it matters
The finalized mean rose from TZS 2,631.3587 on 9 October to 2,633.1199 on 16 October. It is a reference, not a customer quote.
What to watch
A share-price result in shillings differs from one converted to dollars. The exchange date, customer price and fees affect conversion.
Government borrowing
Signal
The latest verified bill-auction rates still come from 7 October. They are background for this week, not a new rate change.
Why it matters
The 364-day yield is 6.2839%; the 91-day yield is 3.4908%. Yield is the annualised return implied by the auction price.
What to watch
The next published auction will test whether rates changed. These auction results are not customer returns after fees or tax.
Opportunity Wire
Signal
The roads agency, TANROADS, reported a drainage contract on Thursday. Its funding source and payment timetable remain undisclosed.
Why it matters
Boko-Basihaya’s TZS 59.49bn contract names China Gezhouba Group and 14 months. This is the work’s value, not money already paid.
What to watch
A confirmed start date and payment terms would clarify delivery. Better road access depends on construction and drainage performance.
