The week ahead

Can the share-price rise hold across more of the market?

Signal

Tanzania’s share-price measures rose last week. The next verified closes can show whether that rise reaches more sectors.

Why it matters

From 18 to 25 September, the domestic index gained 2.49% and the all-share index gained 1.74%. Friday close: DSEI 4,682.13, TSI 10,419.49.

What to watch

Industrial shares fell during the same week. New prices and trading records can test breadth; no outcome is known.

CRDB and NMB explain most of the domestic lead. This is index arithmetic, not a finding that either share is attractively priced.

Method and limits

DSE weights these indices by market capitalisation. For each share, KCP takes the change in DSE reported market cap from 18 to 25 September and divides it by the starting cap of each applicable index. Domestic shares are in both; cross-listed shares are in DSEI. KCP's coverage roster supplies the classification. Turnover and the count of rising shares are separate measures and do not enter this calculation. A small residual reflects rounding in published figures.

Share prices

Will the next verified close show a wider rise?

Signal

Domestic share prices rose 2.49% from 18 to 25 September. Industrial shares moved the other way.

Why it matters

The all-share index gained 1.74%. These are price measures; they do not count traders or show that every sector rose.

What to watch

The next verified close can test whether sectors move together. Trading breadth and value need separate checks.

Government borrowing

What would the next bill auction establish?

Signal

The 364-day Treasury bill yield fell at the 23 September auction. The next result has no confirmed date in this record.

Why it matters

The yield was 6.29%, against 6.47% on 9 September. Yield is the annual rate implied by the auction price, not a saver promise after costs.

What to watch

A new official result at the same maturity would show whether the fall continued. The auction calendar can change.

Currency context

What can the next official currency sheet tell us?

Signal

The official mean cost of one United States dollar was slightly higher in shillings on 25 September than a week earlier.

Why it matters

Bank of Tanzania recorded TZS 2,645.45 per dollar on 25 September, versus TZS 2,641.34 on 18 September. Customer rates and fees differ.

What to watch

A later dated sheet can test the direction. Currency movement alone cannot explain share-price changes.

Opportunity Wire

MUA Life starts operating in Tanzania; scale remains unmeasured

Signal

MUA Life Tanzania launched on 21 September, according to a report published on 26 September. The report gives no investment amount.

Why it matters

It adds a life insurer to the market. The report names no capital commitment or premium result, so its commercial scale cannot yet be measured.

What to watch

A disclosed capital amount or later premium figures would show scale. No date is announced for either.

The Ghost · edition context

The model-book allocation read

The Ghost hypothetical model book was +19.00% since inception at its 25 September mark. Later results are unavailable. Contributions are separate from performance; this is not a real portfolio.

Tape read: Five verified sessions to 25 September lifted the domestic Tanzania Share Index 2.49% and the banking index 3.44%, while equity turnover fell 48.2% to TZS 27.471bn; the board rose on roughly half the money it used the week before. Read against the model book, that arithmetic is a record and a caution in the same five days: the hypothetical NAV marked TSh 620.28m on 22 September, its highest reading, and closed the week at TSh 617.96m for a money-weighted +19.00% since inception, with contributed capital unchanged. What the tape changes is the risk map rather than the holdings: the largest model-book equity allocation is back to 19.3% of the book and the top two are 36.5%, so the single-name cap dated for 1 October reads as more relevant than it did a week ago, and the 364-day bill rung falling for a fifth consecutive auction puts a duration question alongside it.
