The week ahead

Wednesday tests borrowing costs after a weaker share-trading week

Signal

Government borrowing costs face a test on Wednesday. Share trading enters the week after prices and activity fell.

Why it matters

Friday's Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange close: all-share DSEI 4,602.26; domestic-company TSI 10,166.24. Indexes summarise share prices.

What to watch

The 23 September bill auction, the next full trading week and a dated railway follow-up are separate tests.

Did the domestic market and the headline index move together or apart over the covered quarter?

Government borrowing

What will Wednesday reveal about borrowing costs?

Signal

The government plans to borrow short-term on 23 September. The last 364-day bill yield was 6.47%, on 9 September.

Why it matters

Yield is annual return implied by price. A new auction reprices government borrowing; it does not promise savers that return after costs.

What to watch

Official results at each maturity will show whether yields rose or fell. The calendar remains subject to amendment.

Share prices

Can the next price move extend beyond a few sectors?

Signal

Domestic-company share prices fell more than the wider market. Their index lost 2.25%, versus 1.20%, from 11 to 18 September.

Why it matters

Banks and finance fell 4.32%; services rose 9.22%. A broad index hides these differences and says nothing about investor motives.

What to watch

The next full week can show whether sectors move together. A headline rise alone would not establish broad participation.

Trading activity

Will more money change hands across the market?

Signal

Less money changed hands in shares last week. Trading totalled 53.054 billion shillings, down 13.12% from the previous week.

Why it matters

Trading value, or turnover, counts completed exchanges. It is not new capital raised, and a larger total need not involve more companies.

What to watch

Compare the next five verified sessions with 14 to 18 September, then check how trading spreads across companies.

Opportunity Wire

Rail land preparation needs a dated next step

Signal

Tanzania's railway agency reports land acquisition for Tabora to Kigoma. Its 19 September update names no new funding.

Why it matters

Land clearance enables construction access. The update discloses neither a compensation budget nor a completion date.

What to watch

A dated compensation or construction update would clarify progress. No follow-up date is announced.

23 September, scheduled by Bank of Tanzania

  2. Share prices and trading value

A complete verified week can distinguish a price move from wider trading. No future close is assumed.

  3. Bank of Tanzania currency sheet

A higher shilling quote per US dollar means more shillings for that dollar. Customer rates and fees differ.

Next dated official observation; date not announced

  4. Tabora to Kigoma land preparation

A budget or completion timetable would clarify the reported progress. The existing update supplies neither.
