Share prices rose, but the gains were uneven

Signal

The main share-price measures rose on Friday. Gains differed across sectors, so the rise was not equally strong everywhere.

The evidence

All shares rose 0.17%; domestic shares 0.19%. DSEI closed at 4,597.48, TSI at 10,142.06 on 9 October.

What to watch

Price measures describe weighted changes, not how many companies rose or why investors traded. The next close tests continuity.

Method and limits

Domestic names: cap change divided by starting domestic cap, minus cap change divided by starting all-market cap. Cross-listed names: subtract the all-market component. KCP checks every company, the implied share basis and each cap-total/index relationship at every retained verified close in the period. This is not official DSE company attribution. Turnover does not enter the calculation. Incompatible basis changes withhold the calculation.

Contributions are rounded; small unallocated residual: 0.000096 pp. No balancing adjustment is applied.

Coverage: 28 companies. KCP classification dated 2026-09-03.

Share prices

Sector gains differed within Friday’s rise

Signal

Share-price measures rose on Friday. Commercial services rose faster than banks and industrial companies.

Evidence

Commercial services gained 0.68%, banks 0.17%, industrials 0.03%. These are weighted price changes, rounded from verified closes.

What to watch

Different company weights can affect each measure. These changes alone do not establish a common cause or investor confidence.

Currency

The dollar reference is provisional

Signal

Monday’s official dollar reference is provisional. It is a guide to currency values, not a price promised to customers.

Why it matters

The newer reference uses slightly fewer shillings per dollar than Friday’s final sheet. Its status can change when finalized.

What to watch

The final dated sheet would settle this comparison. Exchange providers may apply different prices and fees.

Opportunity Wire

A school plan is not yet operating capacity

Signal

The Citizen reports plans to build a GEMS school in Zanzibar. Planned places are not yet available to students.

Why it matters

Construction would add education facilities if completed. The report gives no investment amount or funding terms.

What to watch

A confirmed start, financing disclosure and opening date would clarify delivery. The 11 October report does not establish those dates.

What to watch

The next tests, without prediction

  1. Next verified DSE close

Tests whether the rise continues and how sector price changes differ.

Next official session; publication time unconfirmed

  2. Final 12 October BoT currency sheet

Tests the provisional dollar reference against the final dated record.

    Publication time unconfirmed

  3. Zanzibar school funding and construction start

Distinguishes a reported plan from funded construction and eventual operating capacity.

No verified date in the 11 October report

Editor’s note

I distinguish Friday’s share-price rise from Monday’s provisional currency reference. Neither identifies why investors traded. I include the Zanzibar school plan as a separately dated report of possible new facilities, without treating a construction plan as committed funding or an operating school. I have not inferred a financing amount or opening date.
