Share-price measures fall as trading slows

Signal

Tanzania’s main share-price measures fell on Monday. Less money changed hands than on Friday, though two banks still dominated trading.

The evidence

DSEI, the All-Share index, closed at 4,564.52, down 0.18%. TSI, the domestic index, closed at 10,064.37, down 0.15%, on 19 October.

What to watch

Both compare with 16 October. An index combines prices with unequal weights; its fall does not mean every share fell.

Where the trading went

Two banks dominate a smaller trading day

Signal

Monday’s share trading value was 22.3% below Friday’s. The banks NMB and CRDB still accounted for most of it.

Evidence

The banks took 87.5% of TZS 2.84 billion traded on 19 October. Figures are rounded; block trades are included and funds excluded.

What to watch

The next verified close can show whether trading spreads. The fall versus 16 October does not establish investor motives.

Dollar reference

Dollar reference matches Monday’s latest reading

Signal

Tuesday’s dollar reference matches Monday’s latest reading. Both remain provisional, so the figures can change.

Why it matters

Bank of Tanzania records TZS 2,635.5876 per US dollar for 20 October, equal to its updated 19 October mean.

What to watch

Finalized records will test both provisional means. Customer exchange rates and fees can differ; these are not transaction quotes.

Opportunity Wire

Development funding allocated; payments still unverified

Signal

Tanzania reports money allocated for development. The Ministry of Finance statement does not show how much has reached projects.

Why it matters

Its 18 October statement reports US$2.54 billion under the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA-21) financing cycle.

What to watch

Project agreements and payment records would show how the allocation becomes usable funding. No payment timetable is established here.

What to watch

The next tests, without prediction

  1. Next verified DSE close

Shows whether the lower trading value persists and trading spreads beyond the two leading banks.

Next official session; publication time unconfirmed

  2. Finalized Bank of Tanzania dollar records

Tests the provisional 19 and 20 October means; customer quotes and fees remain separate.

    No confirmed publication time

  3. Development-finance agreements and payments

Would distinguish funds allocated from amounts made available to projects.

    No confirmed payment timetable

Editor’s note

I read Monday’s falling share-price measures alongside a smaller trading day. Neither reveals why investors acted. Tuesday’s dollar reference matches Monday’s updated provisional figure, not the earlier reading in yesterday’s edition. I distinguish the Ministry’s reported development allocation from payments to projects. Its separate commitment figure is not added because the relationship between the amounts is unclear.
