  2. 02A falling All-Share index hid a domestic gain

The week in review: 19 to 23 October

The headline fell, but domestic shares gained

Signal

The broad share-price measure fell this week while the domestic measure rose. The market’s direction depended on which companies counted.

Why it matters

All-Share fell 0.73% and the domestic index rose 0.35% between Friday closes. Industrial shares gained, while banks slipped.

What to watch

Coverage and company weights matter. Friday close: DSEI 4,539.27, TSI 10,114.38. Neither index says how widely gains were shared.

02 · Turnover concentration

How much traded, and how much did one counter carry?

The week’s money had 5 very different shapes.

Session turnover Leading counter shareExplainTurnover concentrationShare of turnover in the leading counterTurnover concentration is the share of total traded value accounted for by one counter or a stated group of counters. How it is calculatedSelected counter turnover ÷ total session turnover × 100.What it does not meanA high share does not establish unusual demand, fair value or repeatable liquidity.Source or method: KCP calculation from DSE traded valueSee it in context →Open the full glossary →Definition only · information and education, not advice

16.73bn shillings traded across 5 sessions, but the darker segment shows why activity and breadth are different questions.

03 · Breadth map

Did the board move with the headline?

6 advanced. 18 declined. The index hid the split.

04 · Rates hurdle

What did safe local-currency paper yield?

The short end sat below policy; the 364-day point cleared it.

05 · Local vs hard currency

What remained after translating the week through USD/TZS?

Index directions differed; read each local change beside its USD translation.

DSEI

TSI

Mechanical USD translation+0.23%

USD/TZS weakened 0.12% over the matched weekly window. The hard-currency line is (1 + local index change) ÷ (1 + FX change) − 1; it is an index translation, not an investable portfolio return, and excludes dividends, costs and tax.

Share prices

A falling All-Share index hid a domestic gain

Signal

The broad market measure fell, but the measure for domestic companies rose. Different company coverage can change the picture.

Why it matters

From 16 to 23 October, All-Share fell 0.73% while the domestic index rose 0.35%. Industrials gained 3.21%; banks fell 0.16%.

What to watch

An index combines company prices with unequal weights. These changes do not prove that gains were widespread or explain investor motives.

The weekly trading record

Two banks took four shillings in every five

Signal

Most of the week’s share trading went through two banks. A busy market was not equally busy across companies.

Why it matters

The five sessions totalled TZS 16.73bn. CRDB and NMB contributed 81.3%, calculated from each company’s reported traded value.

What to watch

Turnover is the value traded, not fresh funding for a company. The total includes reported blocks and cannot establish buying motives.

Currency

The dollar reference rose again

Signal

A dollar required slightly more shillings than on the previous Friday. This changes how a shilling result translates into dollars.

Why it matters

The finalized mean rose from TZS 2,633.1199 on 16 October to 2,636.7419 on 23 October, a 0.14% increase.

What to watch

This is a reference rate, not a customer quote. A dollar-converted share result also depends on exchange timing, fees and dividends.

Government borrowing

Shorter and longer bill rates moved apart

Signal

The new auction did not move every borrowing rate in the same direction. The 91-day rate rose while the 364-day rate fell.

Why it matters

On 21 October, the 364-day yield was 6.1342%, against 6.2839% on 7 October. The 91-day yield rose from 3.4908% to 3.6357%.

What to watch

Yield is the annualised return implied by the auction price. These results do not establish customer returns after fees or tax.

Opportunity Wire

Faster student-loan payments remain a proposal

Signal

The student-loan board is considering faster payments. The proposal does not establish new loan money or a launch date.

Why it matters

Daily News reported the proposal on 22 October. Paying sooner could shorten students’ wait, without increasing their loan amounts.

What to watch

A formal implementation notice would clarify the payment channel and timing. The retained report excerpt gives no funding details.

What this edition watched

  1. Next official DSE close

Shows whether the domestic and broad indices keep moving differently; company-level prices are needed to assess breadth.

Next verified session; publication time unconfirmed

  2. Next bill-auction result

Tests whether the split between 91-day and 364-day yields persists.

No next date verified in the frozen auction record

  3. Student-loan payment implementation

A named payment channel and timetable would distinguish a proposal from a service students can use.
